Art and Design

Intent

At Blackford Primary School, we believe every child is an artist. Our Art and Design curriculum aims to engage and inspire every child, developing their confidence to experiment, invent, think creatively and create their own works of art. Our children will be taught Art and Design in a way that ensures the progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. They will be given opportunities to develop their ability, nurture their talents, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond.

 Implementation:

We follow a broad and balanced Art and Design curriculum that builds on previous learning which scaffolds, supports and provides challenges for learners. Throughout the school, we use an online Art and Design scheme called Kapow. Planning produced by Kapow is used by teachers. The scheme ensures the progression of skills and covers all aspects of the Art and Design curriculum. Art and Design is an integral part of the school curriculum and is embedded into the planning and may also be taught as part of a wider topics in other subjects. The children are given the opportunity to work independently, in pairs, small groups or as a whole class allowing the pupils to work with a range of abilities and gender. Over a half term, the Art provision might be from a weekly lesson, afternoon or multi-day project to really allow deep immersion in a project and time to produce a quality piece of work. The children’s work is recorded in their sketch books which sets out the learning journey for the coming weeks. The sketch book allows the children to explore, experiment and develop skills in preparation for the outcome. Children are encouraged to be bold, take risks and value the sketchbook as a working document of their art journey which is ongoing.

Impact:

The impact of our Art and Design curriculum can be seen not only in our children’s sketch books but also through classroom displays and the school environment where individual and collaborative outcomes are celebrated and valued. Children are encouraged to develop imagination and creativity and can reflect on the work they create during their art experiences through self -reflection that is often documented in individual sketch books. They develop a strong spirit to continually challenge themselves and seek further knowledge to support their ambitions. They support one another to believe they can develop their own creativity through a willingness to take risks with an enthusiastic resilience and to see a journey through to completion, at times way beyond an original idea. Progress in Art and Design Progress will be shown through; individual discussions regarding the process leading up to an outcome as well as a finished piece of work and observations of the pupil’s as they work. The progress works alongside our Art and Design assessment policy to ensure that progression of skills is taking place. Progress will be shown through outcomes and through the important record of the process leading to them.

EYFS

In EYFS, the children have daily access to a variety of media and materials which they can explore to produce their own creative work. This may be displayed in the classroom or in books. Provision is carefully planned to suit the interests of the children, whilst developing the necessary skills they are working on. Through on-going observations of the children, the adults have an in-depth knowledge about each child’s development. This ensures that the adults facilitating learning know each child’s next steps and can give the children the learning opportunity and experience they need to develop their skills in art. Pupils will also experience lessons taken from the Kapow scheme of work. We place high importance on EYFS, as we know this provides the fundamental base for all learning. It is then in KS1, where the fundamental skills are developed and we look for any gaps in the children’s skills, so that we can close any gaps at an earlier stage.

In the EYFS children are assessed within Expressive Arts and Design and their progress is tracked and recorded against end of year outcomes. This is facilitated through observations, the use of Tapestry & individual art outcomes produce. Children are given opportunities to freely explore a range of materials and colours during continuous provision and planned activities. They will be encouraged to experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function as well as sharing their creations, explaining the process they have used. This process will be encouraged through questioning that promote thinking and development of ideas. Such as, ‘what would happen if…? ‘How can you include….’ ‘How did you make ….’ The practitioners encourage the children to challenge their thoughts and processes
