Music

Intent

At our school we perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians:

• learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence

• understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Implementation:

The schemes of work we use allow progression and differentiation so that children of all abilities are able to access the music curriculum and develop their skills.

  • The Music Curriculum has been developed to integrate national guidelines with class topics and themes in a skills-based, creative and spiral curriculum.
  • The aims and objectives of teaching music in our school are those of the National Curriculum for Music in England 2014 (See Appendix 1).
  • In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 we use the online music scheme Kapow. See Appendix 2 for the Kapow scheme overview.
  • Each class (EYFS to Year 6) receives a total of one hour’s music teaching per week.
  • Kapow planning is used by teachers to drive children’s development within music. Every year group will build upon the learning from prior year groups therefore developing depth of understanding and progression of skills. • Lessons provide opportunities for children to develop practical skills and progress by listening and appraising, singing, playing, composing, and performing
  • In KS2, year groups also have the opportunity to have lessons led by a music specialist teaching keyboard and ukulele.
  • All pupils are encouraged to participate in and enjoy music lessons regardless of race, culture, gender, ability or physical limitations. A mutual respect and tolerance for all cultures will be promoted through the study of music.
  • During music lessons pupils will be expected to work collaboratively in groups, as a whole class, in pairs and individually. Groups are chosen (by the teacher or pupils) appropriate to the task set. Children have the opportunity to work in groups of both mixed and same gender and ability.
  • Pupils with special educational needs are able to develop confidence through the expression of their feelings in music, as it is a subject in which success does not depend on academic ability.
  • Children who demonstrate a talent for music through musical skills beyond their age will be given extra challenges through differentiated work, questioning, through extra-curricular activities and performing opportunities.
  • Annual events include singing at harvest, carol services, Christmas performance and through our summer arts performance.
  • Alternating each year, the school participates in a Sing Out performance at Carlisle cathedral and Cumbria Music Festival.
  • A peripatetic teacher is available for tuition at a fixed cost for Keyboard or Guitar.

Continual assessment allows progression throughout each topic, we do this through:

Questioning in order to understand children's musical understanding, ie open-ended questioning and using the outcomes to guide formative assessment.

Sharing what has taken place during the lesson, which is also a great skill when working towards performing to an audience.

Recording in music ‘group’ book.

Videos and voice recordings are to be taken throughout the term and saved on children’s individual PC folders

Impact:

Our pedadgogy at Blackford provides opportunities for all children to create, play, perform, explore and enjoy music, which allows them to develop the skills they need to become musicians as well as having the experiences of hearing and appreciating a range of musical genres and cultures.

We offer a spiral curriculum which provides the children with the depth and breadth they need in order to progress throughout their primary school journey. Mastery in music means both a deeper understanding of musical skills, concepts and learning something new; we aim to have given our children these skills so that they can go on to enjoy and experience music in the wider world. We aim for all of our children to leave us with this deeper understanding, but above all, a life-long love for, and appreciation of, music which they can take with them on their journeys.
