Religious Education
Intent
As a Church of England School, the Christian faith is the foundations of everything that we do at Blackford C of E Primary School. We want our R.E curriculum to enable every child to flourish and love life to all its fullness (John 10:10). We believe that it is fundamental for the children to belong to a safe and nurturing community, founded on strong Christian values of compassion, forgiveness and trust. Our children will develop an array of skills that will enable them to make their own positive contribution to our global society. At Blackford school we ensure R.E is fun, engaging, creative and inclusive. We believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. The aim of Religious Education in our school is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other world faiths; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Our R.E. curriculum is underpinned by the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education. Through R.E, our pupils will explore key concepts and questions which will develop their knowledge of significant religions. Pupils will develop their abilities to articulate the beliefs and practices of the major religions. They will be taught to question thoughtfully, and to compare compassionately, in order to celebrate the diversity of thinking across the globe.
Implementation
While following the Blackburn planning from EYFS – Year 6, RE is taught once a week and our school values are taught through Collective Worship every day. This can take many forms, including, whole school, individual class, visitor, child or vicar-led, outdoor or within our own church. Our scheme follows an enquiry-based approach using the key Christian concepts and children are encouraged through each topic and lesson to enjoy an amazing pilgrimage of discovery. Each unit follows the same journey; ‘to begin with’; ‘explore the text’; ‘discover the impact’; ‘make the connection’ and ‘dive deeper’. Key questions and key vocabulary are discussed and explored at the beginning of each unit and throughout. Our children use group RE journals to record their learning at EYFS and KS1. At KS2, our children have their own individual RE book to record as well as a group journal to contribute to. We encourage our pupils to ask questions, even those that seem impossible to answer, about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. Class teachers assess children’s learning throughout each lesson and carry out summative assessments at the end of each unit using a progressive ladder of assessment.
Impact
Our children enjoy and value R.E and take great pride in their work and understanding of this subject. R.E develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other world faiths, traditions and worldviews. It also enhances pupils’ awareness and understanding of religions and beliefs, teachings, practices and forms of expression. R.E provides the opportunity for personal reflection and spiritual development for each individual child and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging in an understanding and caring environment. Thus enabling them to flourish individually within their school, communities and as a global citizen. It allows pupils to develop respect and sensitivity to others; those whose faiths and beliefs are different from their own. Through RE, pupils will gain a broader understanding of different world religions which are not currently widely represented in our school and community demographic. This will enable children to understand, learn about and respect the wider world and other people and cultures other than their own.
